My house is near a quarry, but that is not the problem. The problem is the trucks that carry the stones from the quarry cause quite a ruckus as they ply on the main road, and our bedroom faces the road!
After researching quite a bit, it was decided that most of the noise was coming from the windows. So, I went to a site called Soundproofwindows.com and ordered windows. The company had someone come and install the windows, which was pretty painless (installation part) not the wallet part though. This indeed helped with the noise and we were quite happy, for a while that is..
Of late(this I attribute to old age) the truck noise again started to bother us. So I started on another project, this time with wall sound proofing.

There are plenty of products out there such as sound damping materials, metal brackets etc, but the one which is an easy project is a special type of Sheetrock called QuietRock from www.quietsolution.com. They have different products for different noise level reductions and we settled on the 525 version. There are two choices for installation for existing home repair projects. Either the old wall can be torn down or the new sheetrock can be put on top of the old one, we decided on the latter. We had hired a contractor to do the installation and it went smooth.
But, I have to admit, although the noise level has gone down even further, I had little higher expectations, I think. Anyway, the rumbling noise from the trucks seem diluted, at least for now…or is it the money spent talking :-) )

The bottom line is, in most cases windows are definitely bigger culprits than the walls. But if you must replace the walls then I would recommend quietrock solution any day.
